A nationwide practical training programme teaching the core ultrasound and needle-guidance skills used in regional anaesthesia.
Foundation Courses are provided free of charge to trainees on College of Anaesthetists training schemes who are current ISRA members.
ISRA supports Foundation Courses in Regional Anaesthesia at centres throughout Ireland. The foundation course has been organised in collaboration with the College of Anaesthesiology of Ireland as part of a curriculum designed to teach anaesthesia trainees the core skills of peripheral nerve blockade. The same standardised format and learning objectives apply at every course location.
Teaching is delivered in small groups through an intensive one-day programme combining short lectures with practical ultrasound and needle-guidance training.
What participants will learn
Identify the axillary brachial plexus, femoral nerve and sciatic nerve in the popliteal fossa using ultrasound.
Develop the practical skills required to advance a needle towards a target under real-time ultrasound guidance.
Apply the core principles of peripheral nerve blockade through practical teaching.
Course outcome
Participants should leave with the core skills required to use ultrasound, identify the relevant anatomy and guide a needle towards a target in real time.
Dates, venues and booking information for upcoming Foundation Courses are available in the events section.
