New BMJ study: labour epidurals and child outcomes

A national Scottish cohort study involving almost 500,000 births found no clinically important association between labour epidural analgesia and serious neonatal neurological illness, neonatal death or cerebral palsy in childhood.

The observational design cannot establish cause and effect, but the findings provide reassurance for patients and clinicians considering epidural analgesia during labour.
