Four fellowship-trained consultants with a special interest in regional anaesthesia supervise the block bay. At least one is always there to guide you.

Each block bay day

  1. 1Follow up yesterday's blocksReview inpatients on the ward, and phone day-case patients, to record pain relief, how long the block lasted and any complications.
  2. 2Plan the day's blocksBetween 08:00 and 08:30, review all 12 theatre lists and agree a regional anaesthesia plan with each surgical, anaesthesia and nursing team at the morning briefing.
  3. 3Perform and record blocksPerform blocks under supervision and record every peripheral and neuraxial block in the electronic anaesthesia record (GE Centricity). This gives you regular feedback on your patients' outcomes and your own performance.

What you'll learn

  • Pre-operative assessment and consent for regional anaesthesia
  • Basic and advanced ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks, taught consultant-to-fellow in theatre

Research and audit

Thursdays are set aside for research and audit when service allows.

  • Every fellow audits an aspect of patient care, using the department's electronic block database
  • Clinical research is encouraged and supported, and new ideas are welcome
  • Research guidance is available, including from a consultant with a PhD in anaesthesia
  • As a Trinity College Dublin teaching hospital, there are opportunities to collaborate with university departments, including on laboratory research
