The hospitals

University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park University Hospital together make up Galway University Hospitals. Merlin Park provides an elective orthopaedic service.

The regional anaesthesia service cares for patients having limb and truncal surgery, and for patients referred through the acute pain service.

Clinical experience

A consultant supervisor is assigned to the block bay every day, and responsibility and independence increase as experience and competence develop. Clinical work includes:

  • Assessing patients and performing blocks in the block bay
  • Documenting blocks and planning postoperative analgesia
  • Reviewing patients after surgery, including block resolution, the quality of their analgesia and any neurological concerns

Teaching, audit and research

  • Teaching. Regional anaesthesia teaching runs on Thursday mornings. The fellow coordinates the programme and teaches undergraduates, postgraduates and other healthcare professionals.
  • Audit. Audit and quality improvement are carried out under consultant mentorship, using the service's own record of regional anaesthesia activity.
  • Research. The department is active in clinical and basic-science research, and fellows are encouraged to join ongoing projects and help write up the results.

Fellows have opportunities to present their work nationally and internationally.

ESRA Diploma

You'll be encouraged to work towards postgraduate qualifications in regional anaesthesia, and the fellowship gives substantial clinical experience towards the ESRA Diploma (ESRA-DRA).

How to apply

The fellowship is a special-interest year, and candidates are anticipated to be post-CCST. Interviews are coordinated by the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland, usually between October and December, for a July start the following year.
